How do I set up Finance Buddy for the first time?
After downloading, open the app and tap Get Started. Sign in or create a free account. You'll be guided through entering your monthly income, setting up spending categories, and creating your first budget — the whole process takes about 3 minutes.
Does Finance Buddy connect to my bank account?
No. Finance Buddy is a manual tracking app — you enter transactions yourself. This means your bank credentials are never entered into the app, keeping your financial accounts completely private and secure. Many users find manual entry helps them stay more mindful of their spending.
Is Finance Buddy free to use?
The free version includes budgeting for up to 5 categories, basic expense tracking, and monthly summaries. The premium version unlocks unlimited categories, savings goals, detailed insights, CSV export, and multi-account support. Upgrade anytime from Settings → Subscription.
📋 Budgeting
How do I create or edit my budget?
Tap Budget in the bottom navigation. If you haven't set one up, tap Create Budget and enter your monthly income. Then add spending limits for categories like Food, Transport, Entertainment, Bills, and more. To edit, tap any category and adjust the limit.
When does my budget reset each month?
By default, budgets reset on the 1st of each month. You can change this to match your payday or any date in Settings → Budget Period → Start Day. This is useful if you get paid on the 15th or bi-weekly.
Can I create custom budget categories?
Yes. In the Budget screen, tap + Add Category, enter a name, choose an icon and color, and set a monthly limit. Custom categories work exactly like the built-in ones.
What happens when I go over budget in a category?
The category will turn red in your budget overview and you'll receive a push notification (if enabled). You can still log expenses over the limit — Finance Buddy tracks the overage and includes it in your monthly report.
💳 Transactions
How do I log an expense?
Tap the large + button at the bottom of any screen. Enter the amount, select a category, choose a date, and add an optional note or photo of the receipt. Tap Save and the expense is instantly added to your budget.
Can I log income, not just expenses?
Yes. When adding a transaction, tap the Income tab (instead of Expense) at the top of the form. Income transactions are tracked separately and show up in your cash flow reports.
How do I set up recurring transactions?
When adding a transaction, toggle on Recurring and choose the frequency: Daily, Weekly, Bi-weekly, Monthly, or Annually. Finance Buddy will automatically log it going forward and include it in your budget projections.
Can I edit or delete a past transaction?
Yes. Go to Transactions and tap any entry to open it. Tap Edit to change details or Delete to remove it. Deleting a transaction will update your budget totals immediately.
🎯 Savings Goals
How do I create a savings goal?
Go to Goals → + New Goal. Name your goal (e.g., "Emergency Fund"), enter the target amount and target date, and choose an icon. Finance Buddy will calculate how much you need to save per month to hit your target on time.
How do I add money to a savings goal?
Open the goal and tap Add Contribution. Enter the amount and date. Your progress bar updates immediately. You can make contributions at any frequency — Finance Buddy tracks your total saved vs. your target.
What happens when I reach my goal?
You'll receive a congratulations notification and the goal will be marked Completed with a confetti animation. Completed goals are archived in Goals → Completed so you can look back on your achievements.
📈 Insights & Reports
How do I view my spending insights?
Tap Insights in the bottom navigation. You'll see a monthly category breakdown, a spending trend chart, and a month-over-month comparison showing where your spending increased or decreased.
Can I export my transaction history?
Yes (premium feature). Go to Settings → Export Data → Export as CSV. You can filter by date range before exporting. The file can be opened in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets.
🔒 Privacy & Data
Where is my financial data stored?
Your data is stored on your device and encrypted in your personal cloud account (iCloud or Google). We do not have access to your financial information — it stays entirely within your account.
How do I delete my account and all my data?
See our Account Deletion Guide for step-by-step instructions. Deleting your account permanently removes all transaction history, budgets, and goals and cannot be undone.
🛠 Troubleshooting
My budget reset early — what happened?
Check your budget start date in Settings → Budget Period. If it's set to "1st of the month," the budget resets on the 1st. You can change this to any day, such as your payday.
Transactions I added are not showing up.
Pull down on the transaction list to refresh. If the issue persists, close and fully reopen the app. If transactions are still missing, go to Settings → Support → Send Diagnostic Report so we can investigate.
How do I restore a premium purchase?
Go to Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchase. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account used for the original purchase. If this doesn't work, contact us at busylandlordapp@gmail.com.
The app is running slowly or crashing.
First, make sure you're on the latest version of the app — check the App Store or Google Play for updates. Then try closing the app completely and reopening it. If the problem continues, go to Settings → Support → Send Diagnostic Report and we'll follow up within 24 hours.
